Heart disease has emerged as the #1 killer of people living in the United States - and it is quickly catching on in other parts of the world, too. There are many conditions that can cause heart disease. However, one emerging - and preventable risk factor - is high cholesterol. September 1st kicked off National Cholesterol Education Month, which is designed to raise awareness of high cholesterol, its relationship to heart disease, and what can be done to lower it.

What Is High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a naturally-occurring substance in the body. In fact, you need cholesterol to perform a variety of important functions in the body. But when cholesterol levels become too high, it can potentially cause health problems.

Getting Your Cholesterol Checked

Getting your cholesterol checked is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself against heart disease. Find out how often you need to get tested, and what to expect when getting tested. (Hint: it's a lot easier than you think.)
